The Roamers are a friendly and vibrant intermediate-level rambling group walking at a moderate pace and undertaking rambles from five to 10 miles in length. For the "regular" Roamers, ascents will exceed 2,000 feet only occasionally, whereas the much less frequent but more challenging hikes by Roamers PLUS may involve ascents exceeding 2,500 feet. On offer is a varied programme of low-, medium- and higher-level walks, taking in lesser-known Wainwrights as well as the outlying fells of Lakeland and beyond. "Regular" Roamers' walks take place fortnightly, usually on Thursdays, although they may be re-scheduled in light of an inclement weather forecast.

More demanding Roamers PLUS hikes are also weather-dependent and have no set days. For all walks, the Convenor checks the weather forecast three days in advance, chooses the route accordingly and notifies the group by e-mail. The walk notification e-mail gives a description of the route, an approximate length of the walk and, if any fells are to be climbed, their height. It also highlights any features with the potential for creating difficulties for some. It is up to individual members to ascertain if they feel they can cope with the demands of the walk as described. If the Convenor believes that any walk is likely to exceed the limits of a group member whose capabilities they know well, she reserves the right to point this out.

Our walks usually start at either 9am or 9:30am. Meeting places vary but are always specified in the walk notification e-mail. All walks are free to join, although, if cars are shared, each passenger will reimburse the driver for the lift in line with the following charges: 0 – 20 miles = £3; 21 – 40 miles = £4; 41 – 60 miles = £5; 61 – 80 miles = £6; 81 – 100 miles = £7; etc.

Although the Convenor carries out risk assessment before every walk, all group members walk at their own risk. Whenever you walk with us, please keep the contact details of those who should be contacted in case of emergency somewhere obvious (e.g. in a wallet/purse in your rucksack) and dress appropriately: sturdy boots with a solid grip are particularly important.

The lists of all the walks undertaken since March 2017, as well as brief reports on those done since 2018, can be accessed via links below.

New members are most welcome. Please contact the Convenor at roamers@skiddawu3a.co.uk if you would like more information.
