'I Vow To Thee My Country' is the biographical account of Sir Cecil Arthur Spring Rice - a British diplomat of Cumbrian decent, whose career spanned the late Victorian and Edwardian era. He rose to become the British Ambassador to Washington during the First World War and unusually for a diplomat of that time he was a published poet. The presentation explores the dramatic circumstances toward the end of his life, that inspired him to craft a poem, which after his death, serendipitously became the hymn we know and love today. A hymn capturing a national mood and arguably, the most iconic of all our hymns.

The talk is fully illustrated with slides and further illuminated with a number of his poems and writings.
